Doctors Fact-Check, Journalists Get Fact-Checked: Comparing Public Trust in Journalism and Healthcare

Public trust in journalism has fallen disconcertingly low. This study sets out to understand the news industry’s credibility crisis by comparing public perceptions of with another institution facing similar challenges: healthcare. Drawing on in-depth interviews 31 US adults, we find that although both healthcare and face distrust, members generally tend feel more trusting individual doctors than they do journalists. is because people (a) perceive be experts their field (b) engage frequently Consequently, our interviewees described treating as “fact-checkers” when it comes health information online, demonstrating physicians despite lack broadly. Meanwhile, opposite unfolds journalism: Instead using legitimate sources fact-check potential misinformation, compelled “fact-check” seeking alternative corroboration. We conclude that, improve among public, journalists must strike right balance between persuading them while also pursuing opportunities peers.
